Did you know... turtles shed? As it grows, a turtle's carapace (or shell) expands alongside the rest of it's body and their scutes (the large, hard scales that cover the shell) shed individually, making way for new scutes to take their place. This process not only helps the turtle grow, but also aids in removing bacteria, or infections from the shell. And depending on the species, a turtle can grow up to 2,000 pounds!!
