In general, polishes are formulated to enhance depth of gloss, to achieve more of that deep wet look. They are most effective on darker colors as darker colors reflect more light. Sometimes polishes will offer very light cleaning ability as well depending on the polish. Waxes will offer a great shine and are usually Carnauba based, but the primary function is protection for the paint from the elements.
