In January 1954, legendary writer Ernest Hemingway and his wife, Mary Welsh, faced near de*th not once, but twice. While on safari in Uganda, their sightseeing plane struck a telegraph wire near Murchison Falls and crashed. The next day, their rescue plane caught fire during takeoff at Butiaba. Trapped inside, Hemingway used his head to smash open the burning door, suffering a fractured skull, burns, and internal injuries. For a time, newspapers even reported the couple de*d.
