今から47年前の今日（12月14日） 国鉄で最後の定期旅客列車をけん引した C57形蒸気機関車135号機。 1975（昭和50）年12月14日、室蘭本線の室蘭～岩見沢間で国鉄最後の定期旅客列車(225列車)が運行されることになり、この列車の牽引機に選ばれたのがC57 135号機でした。 室蘭駅には朝早くから3,000人もの人々が押し寄せ、8両編成の客車には2,000人もの乗客が乗り込み、吹雪の中7時58分に発車しました。沿線には蒸気機関車との別れを惜しむ多くの人々が集まり、C57 135号機の雄姿を見送りました。 こうして225列車は終着の岩見沢駅をめざしましたが、途中から何としても乗り込もうという人も多く、徐々に列車は遅れ始めます。いつしか雪はやみ、晴れ間ののぞく原野をC57 135号機は力強く走り続け、定刻より1時間14分遅れて12時56分に無事、岩見沢駅に到着しました。この時、明治の鉄道開業以来100年余りにわたり、旅客列車の先頭に立ち続け、日本の蒸気機関車の歴史にひとつのピリオドが打たれました。 C57 135号機は引退の翌年1976（昭和51）年5月14日より交通博物館にて保
