I don’t always start the soffit from the top. It depends on the situation. If it’s a steep gable on the side of the house 3 stories in the air, then I’ll work my way from the bottom up, installing the siding and soffit as I go. Starting from the top makes the gable even and puts the soffit bend at the rib, making it look perfect. I’ve been using a Dewalt narrow crown stapler for over 9 years to install aluminum soffit.
