What Scuba Divers Need to Know About Depth and Pressure

1. Commercial Diving: Mastering the Pressure of the Deep When divers descend into the ocean, the pressure increases by 1 atmosphere every 10 metres. At 100 metres below the surface, the body is under 11 times the normal pressure experienced at sea level. Without hyperbaric understanding and infrastructure, this would lead to: Nitrogen narcosis (the “rapture of the deep” – causing disorientation and blackouts) Oxygen toxicity Decompression sickness (aka "the bends") — nitrogen bubbles forming in
