In 1916, an expedition led by Robert Griggs discovered the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes - a steaming landscape created by the 1912 Novarupta volcanic eruption. Inspired by the wonders he saw, Griggs worked to preserve Katmai as a national park. His efforts to protect Katmai for future generations exemplifies the national park idea.
