Breakaway Roping 101: It is a timed rodeo event that specifically highlights the skill and precision of roping without requiring the competitor to fully dally, or tie off, the rope to the saddle horn. In breakaway roping, a calf is released from a chute, and the roper, positioned on horseback in the roping box, gives chase. The objective is for the roper to throw a rope around the calf's neck in the quickest time possible. Unlike other roping events, the roper in breakaway roping is not required
