Prenatal screening for fetal aneuploidy can be performed by analyzing cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in maternal blood, which derives from both maternal and placental sources during pregnancy. Placental cfDNA is rapidly cleared from the maternal circulation after delivery, thus cfDNA test results in future pregnancies are not affected by prior pregnancies.No result rates generally fall between 1 and 3 percent.
