Earth is headed for an unavoidable mass extinction event in less than 80 years, according to a dire prediction by one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers. Researchers used the tool to create virtual Earths including all species of flora and fauna and 15,000 food webs. The results showed cascading extinctions are unavoidable at this point, with the planet losing roughly 10 percent of animals and plants by 2050. That number rises to 27 per cent by 2100.
