The appendix, a tiny organ that is part of the large intestine, can sometimes become inflamed (appendicitis). If left untreated, an inflamed appendix can lead to serious complications. For example, an inflamed appendix can end up rupturing and if this happens, bacteria from the appendix can infect the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis). Peritonitis can quickly lead to sepsis and therefore death due to organ failure. . The function of the human appendix is not totally clear. Traditional
