Microsoftは、ガラスストレージ技術「Project Silica」の最新進捗を報告した。石英に加え安価なホウケイ酸ガラスでのデータ保存に成功。フェムト秒レーザーと「Azure AI」を用い、数テラバイトを数万年保持できるとしている。
従来のストレージ技術は、データの指数関数的な増加、コストの上昇、数十年にわたるデータ保存の必要性といった課題に直面している。こうした課題を克服するため、DNA（デオキシリボ核酸）を記録媒体に用いる「DNAストレージ」への関心が高まっており、理論段階から実用化に向けた検証段階に移行しつつある。
