この問題を解決しうるのが、生命の起源に関する有力な仮説「RNAワールド仮説」だ。RNAは情報を保存する能力(DNAのような役割)と、化学反応を触媒する能力(タンパク質のような役割)の両方を一つの分子で兼ね備えている。つまり、最初はRNAだけで情報の記録と自分自身のコピー作業の両方をこなしていた時代があったのではないか。これがRNAワールド仮説だ。
