本名をニール・レスリー・ダイアモンドという彼は1941年、ニューヨークのブルックリンに生まれた。一時は学問の世界、特に生物学の分野に進む可能性もあったが、そんなころに自作曲が独立系レーベル界隈で注目され始め、その質の高さを認められる。そうして彼は10代後半にして音楽の道へと進むこととなった。

2026年1月24日に85歳の誕生日を迎えたニール・ダイアモンドのユニバーサル ミュージックによる日本公式アーティスト・ページが開設された。あわせて、彼の代表曲である「スウィート・キャロライン」の日本語字幕付きミュージック・ビデオが公開となった。
